Planning Permission for London Road houses

The Herts Advertiser reports that Tesco has finally asked for planning permission to do up the dilapidated houses on London Road. St Albans Councillor Chris Brazier himself makes the point that it is now three years since Tesco first promised to do something to the houses. We'd also like to put our skeptical hats on and point out that applying for planning permission doesn't mean that the houses will be put back into use tomorrow! Indeed, we would ask why Tesco needs planning permission for perfectly useable houses.

Still, every little helps, as the saying goes.

See the planning application - Tesco are still talking about doing this in preparation of development of the area behind and interestingly making the back garden spaces behind the properties smaller than current footprint

Plans are at (see page 31 of 31 for map):

Slipped in just before Easter - do Stop Tesco object??

Plans state: Refurbishment and reinstatement of existing properties involving removal of existing rear extensions and erection of 1.8 metre high boarded fence and gates and 1.0 metre high chain link fence

Response required by 30/4 and decision on 25/5

With Tesco profits of over £3billion (£100 per second) you might have thought they could have afforded something better for the London Road frontages than this plan allows.

Quite clearly they don't give a **** about St Albans they just want to make as much money for their overpaid directors as possible and will hold onto this site until you are worn down and its fits with Tesco's continued expansion programme (or they reach the point where the only shop is Tesco!)

The council should compulsoraily purchase the whole site and use it for something useful Now

Tesco own property in Inkerman Road as well as the ones on London Road. It appears that last week (w/c 29th June) squatters moved into one of the houses. Inkerman Road is a very quite residential street and is a no through road. Posters have been put in the window by the squatters addressed to the owners stating that they need to get access through the courts. Saturday saw an ambulance called out to attend to a very bloody head injury and the street now has a constant stream of people shouting and drinking in the street. The police were also in attendance over the weekend. If anyone can help / advise on this issue please let me know, I am trying to speak to tesco which is proving not too easy.

Deric - thanks for your comment. We have posted it in a new item and forwarded it to the local press and our local councillor.
