Tesco's Tax Web

Those wanting more news about the Guardian/Tesco libel case should read this update today in The Guardian. Assuming this article is correct, the libel case may come down to whether it is more defamatory to be seem to be avoiding paying Corporation Tax or Stamp Duty Land Tax - and whether the amount of tax avoided is a reputation issue for a major corporation.

As we've said before about Tesco, and this applies just as much to its ongoing other libel suit in Thailand (here's the latest news on this), the issue for us isn't so much what Tesco does - it is the fact that it can afford to spend money on legal writs and tax avoidance that smaller shops can't.

Local newsagents, grocers and market traders would love to reduce their tax demands by using overseas companies and hiring expensive tax experts - but they can't afford to. Tesco can, and can then use the tax savings to both improve its massive profits, and cut prices to drive local competitors out of business. So there goes any sense of a level playing field...

Surely it wouldn't be THAT bad if a Tesco was built. St Albans would then have somewhere in the town centre open AFTER 8pm. When I get home from work NOTHING is open except for blockbusters!
Popcorn and M&M dinners is starting to make me FAT.
I like the idea of a Cinema though. FRESH popcorn and Expensive chocolate for dinner instead!
Why not build an Italian restaurant? St Albans could always do with a few more.
BUT on a serious note, my ideas would be:
- Build an open area to move the market here to free space for pedestrians in town on Saturdays.
- An independant cinema that would show alternative films not readily available at Hatfield/Luton/Hemel etc
- An ice rink would be fun
- A nightclub with some class would be nice
- A giant car park would be efficient as it would probably reduce traffic in town. I'm sure most of the traffic is people looking for parking spaces! It would be a mini 'park and ride'. People could then walk to town centre and we could solve the obesity AND traffic problems in one go.

Anonymous - thanks for your ideas.

The only point that we'd make against what you say is that Tesco's proposed store is not in the town centre, but 750m away. A supermarket in the town centre (or an expanded Tesco Metro!) would certainly be a good thing, and would also allow people to get their using publc transport.

The proposed Tesco store is as far from the centre as Sainsburys - and that is open past 8pm!
